The Life of Rufus Porter
Rufus Porter was an American painter, inventor, and the founder of Scientific American magazine. Born in West Boxford, Massachusetts, he moved to Maine as a child and later lived in New Haven, Connecticut. His diverse career spanned many disciplines; he was a prolific inventor of items such as turbine water wheels, windmills, and rotary engines. He also sought to pioneer aerial navigation with plans for a steam-powered airship designed to transport passengers to the California Gold Rush.
Beyond his mechanical pursuits, Porter was a notable muralist. Between 1825 and 1845, he decorated approximately 160 houses and inns across New England, including locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. His work often featured scenes of entire towns or harbors, ranging from simple silhouettes to full-color compositions.
Artistic Technique and Legacy
Porter’s murals were typically executed on large scales directly onto dry plaster walls. He utilized a combination of freehand painting and stenciling to create his works. In some instances, he used a cork stopper to stamp foliage into the design. His artistic output also included portraits of household members and silhouette portraits created using a portable camera obscura that he built.
