      Samuel Spode

      1798 - 1858

      A Life of Equestrian Portraiture

Samuel Spode was a British painter who specialized in equestrian sporting scenes, with a particular focus on the portraiture of military and sporting horses. His work often captured the essence of horse racing and fox hunting, frequently featuring prominent animals such as Birdcatcher, Caractacus, and Voltager. He also portrayed significant historical horses, including the Duke of Wellington's war horse, Copenhagen, and the charger Ronald, which was ridden by Lord Cardigan during the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Spode's career was marked by significant movement; he emigrated to Van Diemen's Land with his wife, Mary Crewe, and his brother Josiah, before returning to England in 1826. During his time in England, he stayed at Heron Cottage in the Staffordshire Potteries. His artistic output included works for various patrons, such as the Earl of Lonsdale and John Dawson Duckett, and some of his paintings were reproduced in The Sporting Magazine.

      Artistic Legacy and Travels

In the 1830s, Spode traveled frequently to Ireland to seek commissions, and he also spent time working as a horse trainer at the Curragh Racecourse. His dedication to his passion for animal painting meant that he worked solely on commissions, and as a result, he never exhibited at well-known exhibitions. Around 1845, he painted several works with Stonehenge in the background, suggesting a period of residence near Amesbury.

Spode's life was characterized by several marriages; he was widowed three times before eventually marrying a girl named Delia in Dublin. He died in Dublin, leaving behind a legacy defined by the many famous horses he depicted throughout his career.
