The Artistic Journey of Theodor Werner

Theodor Werner was a German painter who began his artistic path with still lifes and landscapes. His early training took place at the Lehrerbildungsanstalt in Nagold and later in Nürtingen. While working as a teacher, he studied at the Stuttgart Academy under Robert Poetzelberger. His pursuit of art led him on study trips abroad, including several visits to Paris, where he received private instruction in the studio of Charles Guérin.

Between 1919 and 1929, his paintings were heavily influenced by the impressionist style. Following his military service in the First World War, he worked as a freelance painter in Großsachsenheim near Stuttgart. In 1930, he married the painter Anneliese Rütgers, known as "Woty," and the couple moved to Paris. During their time in Paris, Werner became a member of the artist group Abstraction-Création, which was founded by Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner, Auguste Herbin, Theo van Doesburg, and Georges Vantongerloo.

      Later Years and Recognition

After returning to Germany, Werner faced a ban on painting and exhibiting under the national socialist regime, as his works were classified as degenerate art. During the Second World War, he served as a technical draftsman for the Wehrmacht, and a significant portion of his paintings was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1945.

His most important period of creation began in 1947, when he became a significant representative of abstract painting. Living and working in Berlin from 1946 to 1959, he was active in the artist group ZEN 49 and became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund 1950. Werner also held positions within the Akademie der Künste in West Berlin, serving as a member and later as the Deputy Director of the Section of Fine Arts. He was appointed as an honorary senator to the Hochschule für Bildende Künste. His work was featured in the first and second documenta exhibitions in Kassel. In 1959, he moved to Munich, where he lived and worked until his death in 1969.
