      Victor Schulte

      1887 - 1972

      Early Life, Family and Training

Victor Schulte was born in Antwerp on 22 September 1887. His early years were shaped by the academic environments of Germany and Belgium, beginning with his time at the Gymnasium in Aachen. It was there that he shared his school days with Walter Hasenclever and Ewald Mataré, forming connections that would remain part of his history. His formal artistic education began in earnest when he moved on to study at the Düsseldorf Academy.

In 1906, Schulte’s path led him to the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. During this period, he studied alongside Paul Sérusier and Alexej von Jawlensky, absorbing the evolving perspectives of the era. His training was not confined to the classroom, however. Between 1908 and 1909, he traveled to Rome for a study period. He was joined in this pursuit by Reinhold Kündig, Eduard Bick, Paul Osswald, and Hermann Huber, seeking to understand the light and form of the Italian landscape.

The lineage of his family continues through the generations, reaching into the modern musical landscape through his grandson, the jazz musician Jochen Pöhlert-Schulte. Schulte's own life was marked by a deep connection to the places where he lived and studied, from the classrooms of Aachen to the studios of Munich and the streets of Rome.

      Circle, Rivals and Pupils

During his formative years in the academies of Düsseldorf and Munich, Schulte moved within circles that would shape the trajectory of modern art. While studying, he formed a lasting friendship with August Macke, a connection that placed him at the heart of significant artistic shifts. His travels also led him to the quietude of Beuron, where he maintained a friendly contact with the painter-monk Willibrord Verkade. These relationships suggest a man who found common ground with both the avant-garde and the spiritual.

His social and professional life was anchored by deep personal ties. He shared a close friendship with Otto Meyer-Amden and Hermann Huber, men who occupied similar intellectual and creative spaces. These bonds were not merely professional acquaintances but were central to his life in Germany and beyond. Even his family connections extended into the arts, with his grandson, the jazz musician Jochen Pöhlert-Schulte, carrying on a different kind of creative legacy.

As his own career progressed, Schulte shared his knowledge with others. One of his notable pupils was Harro Heinz Theodor Fromme, who balanced the life of a painter with that of an opera singer. Through such students, Schulte's influence moved through the artistic community, passing on his perspective to a new generation of creators.

      Key Works and Museum Collections

The legacy of Victor Schulte is preserved within the walls of the Landesmuseum Hannover, where several of his pieces find a permanent home. His ability to capture the quiet details of life is evident in works like Blumenstilleben vor einem Fenster, a composition measuring 60 × 50 cm. He also turned his attention to the atmosphere of local commerce, as seen in Wochenmarkt im Morgengrauen, an unsigned oil on hardboard that measures 75.5 × 95 cm.

His landscapes often reflect a deep connection to the land and its changing light. This is felt in Blühendes Land, an oil on canvas measuring 61 × 75 cm, and in his 1956 work, Blick auf die Jakobikirche in Hannover-Kirchrode. Even in earlier years, his hand was present in works such as Winter, which dates from about 1931.
