The Artistic Evolution of Walter Leblanc
Walter Leblanc was a Belgian painter, graphic artist, and object artist. His academic journey began at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he studied from 1949 to 1954 under Antoine Marstboom, followed by studies at the Hoger Institut voor Schone Kunsten from 1955 to 1956. While working as a commercial graphic designer after his marriage in 1956, he simultaneously established himself as a freelance artist. His creative output evolved from working with geometrically abstract monochromes starting in 1951 to creating light-based relief series made of sand during the 1950s.
By 1959, torsion became his primary method of expression. Through the twisting and winding of paper, cardboard, or threads on or within surfaces, Leblanc created three-dimensional structures and sculptures, often working in series. His later work, specifically the "Archétypes" group formed in 1975, utilized systematic overlapping, stacking, and sequencing of basic geometric forms to create strictly constructive, rhythmic compositions.
