A Life of Art and Nature

Born in Arnhem, the Netherlands, William Henry Machen was the son of Augustine Ulysses Machen and Agatha Kuyke. His early artistic foundation was laid through the instruction of his uncle, C. W. Kuyke, a portrait painter in Arnhem. Following a journey from Rotterdam to America, the family eventually settled on a farm in Toledo, Ohio. This rural environment provided Machen with a wealth of natural subjects, allowing him to capture landscapes, game birds, animals, rivers, and streams. His artistic output was vast, encompassing oil paintings, watercolors, pencil sketches, and pen and ink, totaling more than 2700 works throughout his lifetime.

Beyond his visual art, Machen was a man of diverse talents. He was an accomplished musician and composer who served as an organist and choir director for St. Francis de Sales church in Toledo. A naturalist by inclination, he studied the natural world extensively and was fluent in six languages. His professional journey took him from teaching art at Detroit College and Sacred Heart Convent to his final years in Washington, D.C.
