      A Life of Artistic Exploration

Born in Berlin, Germany, William Straube was a painter who navigated the diverse landscapes of art education and independent creation. Coming from an artistic family, he began drawing and painting as a child. His early training as a decorative painter and drawing teacher led him to study fine arts in Berlin, where he became a master student of the history painter Josef Scheurenberg. His journey took him across many borders, including travels to England, Spain, Italy, and North Africa. Notably, he spent the years between 1908 and 1911 at the Paris Académie of Henri Matisse. Later, he studied at the Stuttgart Academy under Adolf Hölzel in 1915/16. His later years were spent at Lake Constance in Neufrach, where he worked as a teacher at Schloss Salem before returning to his life as a freelance artist.

      Style and Legacy

The work of William Straube is characterized by a masterful command of drawing techniques, developing within the tension between the French avant-garde and German modernism. His oeuvre is diverse, encompassing oil paintings, drawings, sketches, and a late period focused almost exclusively on watercolor and pastel paintings of Lake Constance landscapes. In 1911, he created a secco work for the city at Münzplatz, featuring six female figures and a symbolic inscription regarding life and time. While much of his work was significant, nine of his pieces were confiscated and destroyed in 1937 during the Nazi "Degenerate Art" action. Today, his artistic legacy is preserved through the William Straube Archive and the Kunstmuseum Singen.
