Hasui learned how to draw and paint as a child under artists Aoyagi Bokusen and Araki Kanyu. Around this time, Hasui suffered from poor eyesight. Hasui moved to Shiobara, a town north of Tokyo, to live with his aunt and recuperate in the countryside littered with natural hot springs.
