Born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, Gerrit Benner was a painter and draftsperson whose career spanned several decades. After attending vocational school to train as a carpenter, he studied marble drawing under Hendrik Wadman and later attended an evening drawing course. His early professional life included working as a traveling leather goods salesman and operating a shop where he provided portrait sketches to customers. Following a period of personal hardship and a depressive crisis that led him to destroy many of his early works, Benner began a new artistic chapter in Leeuwarden in 1945. His work eventually gained significant recognition, leading to exhibitions in cities such as Groningen and Amsterdam, and participation in international events like the Biennale in São Paulo.
Benner's oeuvre is characterized by a progression in technique and subject matter. His early works featured a dark and melancholy color palette, often focusing on themes such as sailing boats, water, the sky, and red horses. His compositions evolved from dramatic landscapes and abstracting compositions toward a dissolution of subject matter and a transition into constructive painting in his later years. He was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Prijs van de Stichting Kunstenaarsverzet 1942-45, the third prize at the 1955 Biennale de São Paulo, and the 1958 Guggenheim International Award for the Netherlands. His contributions to Dutch art were further recognized with the Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
