This early fascination with detail would become a hallmark of his mature style. His father, a retired military man holding a noble title, instilled in him a sense of discipline and civic duty, while his mother’s Serbian heritage perhaps contributed to the artist's cosmopolitan outlook. Pokhitonov’s formal education was somewhat fragmented. He briefly attended the Petrovskaya Agricultural Academy in Moscow, where he became entangled with radical political circles—an experience that led to expulsion and a period of supervised confinement.
