      A Voice from Guben

Corona Elisabeth Wilhelmine Schröter was born in Guben, within the Holy Roman Empire, into a house filled with the sounds of practice and performance. Her father, an oboist named Johann Friedrich Schröter, provided her first lessons on the keyboard and guitar. This musical foundation extended to her siblings, as her brothers studied the piano and violin while her sister also pursued singing. The family eventually moved to Leipzig, where the young girl’s training took a more formal turn under the guidance of Johann Adam Hiller.

In Leipzig, she learned the nuances of solfège, diction, and Italian within a school designed specifically to address the gaps in musical education for women. While her early vocal training was difficult and caused some damage to her voice, she developed an intensity that stayed with her throughout her career. She performed in the Grosse Konzerte series, often standing alongside other students like Gertrud Schmeling.

      The Weimar Years

A move to Weimar in 1776 brought a new chapter of life at the court of Duchess Anna Amalia. Having been brought along by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, she took up the position of Kammersängerin. Her presence in the court theatre was marked by her involvement in many productions, often playing roles written specifically for her. She inhabited characters such as Iphigenia in Iphigenie auf Tauris and Dortchen in Die Fischerin.

Her work during this period went beyond acting. She composed incidental music for plays, including the opening song Der Erlkönig for Die Fischerin. This particular musical setting was part of the early Classical era lied tradition. Her life in Weimar was deeply intertwined with the literary figures of the time, as she collaborated on works that were performed in local theaters and shared within private libraries.

      Later Pursuits and Legacy

As the professionalization of the court theatre changed the landscape of performance in 1783, her focus shifted. She moved away from the stage to teach singing, write, and practice painting. In 1786 and 1794, she published two collections of her own songs. These volumes were significant as some of the first large-scale song publications released by a woman.

The later years were marked by changes in health. Lung and respiratory issues eventually led her to move to Ilmenau in 1801. She passed away there in August 1802. While much of her written work, including her autobiography and many of her musical scores, did not survive the passage of time, the songs that remain offer a glimpse into her musicality.
