The Life and Artistic Evolution of Ludwig Bartning
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Ludwig Bartning was a painter and illustrator whose career spanned several decades. After studying under Paul Schultze-Naumburg and attending the private school of Ludwig Schmid-Reutte and Friedrich Fehr in Munich, he spent time in Rome between 1898 and 1901. His early work focused on landscapes, leading to exhibitions in the Munich Secession and later in Berlin Secession exhibitions. Bartning's professional life was deeply connected to art education. He taught at the Unterrichtsanstalt of the Staatliches Kunstgewerbemuseum and later served as a professor. From 1924 to 1945, he held a position at the Vereinigten Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst in Berlin-Charlottenburg. While his early career was defined by landscape painting, his later work shifted toward floral motifs and botanical illustrations.
