The Life and Career of Otto Coester

Born in Rödinghausen, Germany, Otto Coester was a multifaceted artist whose professional life spanned several disciplines, including work as a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and university teacher. His academic journey began with studies in interior design at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Barmen, followed by the study of art history at the University of Cologne. After a period in Munich in 1922, his travels took him through Paris, Austria, and the Czech Republic. In 1934, he began his tenure as a lecturer at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, eventually being appointed as a professor of free graphic arts in 1938. He continued to teach at the academy until 1967, serving as its deputy director between 1954 and 1964.

Coester's artistic output was marked by significant shifts in style. His graphic works from the 1930s were characterized by romantic realism, which later evolved into a surrealist fantasy following the Second World War. In this later period, he utilized human figures as dreamlike characters within a suggestive atmosphere. His diverse body of work included illustrations for literature, such as the first edition of Franz Kafka's Die Verwandlung, and various subjects including landscapes, still lifes, and musicians.

      Exhibitions and Legacy

Throughout his career, Coester participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1948 and documenta II in Kassel in 1959. His work has been featured in various international settings, from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the Uffizien in Florence. His artistic legacy is reflected in the many students he taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, including figures such as Heinz Mack and Wolfgang Schmitz. In 1967, he was awarded the Cornelius-Preis by the city of Düsseldorf before retiring to Wilhelmsdorf.
