An English Landowner and Artist
Reginald Cholmondeley was an English landowner, artist, and collector from Condover Hall, Shropshire. Beyond his role as a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Shropshire, he was an enthusiastic amateur sculptor of some accomplishment. His artistic work included many of the elaborate sculptural decorations at Condover Hall, as well as sculpted monuments such as a recumbent effigy of his wife, Alice Mary Egerton, in the parish church at Condover, which features her alongside their infant daughter and an empty cradle. He also sculpted the recumbent effigy of his cousin, Blanche Heber.
As a painter, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and painted portraits, including one of Sir Theodore Martin. His interests as a collector were vast, encompassing books, manuscripts, paintings, armour, and curiosities. His collection included various Old Masters, Elizabethan works, and items such as Birds of Paradise.
