The Quiet Presence of Roger Millet

The work of Roger Millet is found in the stillness of a single moment. His hand moves across wood, a surface that carries its own texture and weight. In his painting Jeanne with Dry Bread, there is a focus on the simple reality of a person and their immediate surroundings. The piece is small, measuring 42 cm in height and 30.5 cm in width, yet it holds a certain gravity. It is a portrait that does not seek to perform, but rather to exist alongside the subject.

His approach to materials shows a preference for the organic. He chose to paint on wood, a choice that lends a specific density to the image. The original frame for his work was crafted from wood designed to imitate bark, a detail that suggests a desire to keep the art connected to the natural world. This tactile quality is central to how his work is perceived.

A Place in the Collection

The preservation of his output is tied to specific institutions. His work Jeanne au pain sec is held within the Musée Victor Hugo, specifically at the Hauteville House. It entered the collection in 1990. This placement ensures that his contribution to 20th-century painting remains part of a documented history.

There is a certain modesty in the way he signs his name. A simple "R. Millet" in the bottom right corner marks the work without demanding attention. It is the mark of a painter who is content to let the subject and the material speak for themselves.
