      Early Life and Artistic Training

Tito Cittadini was born in 1886 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to parents who had immigrated from Italy. His early years in the city were shaped by this immigrant background. In 1907, he began his formal studies in architecture, focusing on the structural and spatial aspects of the built environment in Buenos Aires.

The direction of his life shifted when he traveled to Europe in 1910. During this time, the focus of his studies changed. He moved away from the technical precision of architecture and decided to switch his study to painting. This decision marked the beginning of his life as a painter, moving from the planning of structures to the application of pigment on canvas.

      The Paris and Spanish Period

In 1911, the focus shifted toward Paris, where he began studying under the Catalan painter Hermen Anglada. This period of tutelage brought him into closer contact with the light and color of the Mediterranean. Following the encouragement of his teacher, he began making several trips to Spain, seeking out the specific qualities of the landscape that had begun to pull at his attention.

A trip to Majorca in 1913 changed the course of his life. The island held a particular pull, one that eventually led him to settle there permanently in 1914. As the complications of the First World War grew elsewhere, he found a sense of stability in this new home, using the island as a constant subject for his oils and watercolors. He remained rooted in this landscape for much of his remaining years.

      Artistic Style and Evolution

Cittadini’s brushwork shifted as his surroundings changed. During his early years, his work leaned toward an Orientalist aestheticism. This period focused on a certain decorative quality, often seen in his early explorations of light and form. When he moved through Montevideo, his approach took on a different character, reflecting Symbolism through a more nuanced handling of subject matter. As he settled into the landscapes of Mallorca, his style moved toward a Fauve-like reality, where the colors and shapes felt more immediate and grounded in the physical world.

In his later years, the scale of his work often became smaller. He turned toward a palette of grays, yet he managed to maintain a sense of brightness and luminosity in these compositions. The heavy, monumental feel of his middle period gave way to something more spontaneous. His later paintings often featured a sense of freshness, even as the tones became more muted. He found a way to balance these quieter colors with a clarity that kept the light present on the surface of the canvas.

      Key Works and Exhibitions

His presence in the art world grew through steady recognition in both Europe and the Americas. In 1923, his work reached the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. A few years later, in April 1927, he exhibited at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid. These appearances helped establish his reputation beyond the borders of Mallorca.

Specific paintings from his middle period earned him formal honors. His 1919 work, La ferida de la muntanya, was awarded at the Exposición Regional d’Art in 1920. Later, in 1924, he received a third medal at the Exposición Nacional de Belles Arts de Madrid. These accolades followed a period where his brushwork began to settle into a more mature, balanced rhythm.

      Later Years and Death

Between 1952 and 1960, the artist's palette shifted. The colors grew more muted, leaning into shades of gray, yet they maintained a certain brightness and freshness. During these years, the scale of the works often became smaller. He turned his attention toward portrait commissions, tasks he handled with a notable sense of ease and speed. His brushwork in this final period took on a more spontaneous quality, characterized by a sense of lightness.

His life in Mallorca continued until the end. He passed away on July 12, 1960, in Cala Major, Palma, Mallorca. While his final years were spent in the region, his death is also associated with Pollença, Majorca.

Where to See the Works Today

The physical presence of his paintings is scattered between his roots in South America and the island that defined his later life. In Buenos Aires, the National Museum of Fine Arts holds one of his works, a piece that remains in the country of his birth. This presence in Argentina provides a link to his early years before his long residency in the Mediterranean.

Much of his output has found a permanent home in the museums of Mallorca. These collections hold the majority of his exhibited works, keeping his vision of the island's light and landscape within the local landscape he painted so often. One can find his traces in the quiet corners of these institutions, where his studies of the terrain and local life are preserved.

Individual pieces occasionally move through the private market. A Mallorcan landscape, which may depict Deia, was recently handled by Christie's. Other works, such as his 1916 oil on canvas titled La Caleta, represent the specific textures and colors he captured during his long years of observation. His paintings exist both in the public view of museums and in private hands, reflecting the life he built between two continents.
