The Life and Landscapes of William Piguenit
Born in Hobart, Australia, William Piguenit was the son of Frederick Le Geyt Piguenit and Mary Ann. His early artistic influences were shaped by his mother, who taught drawing, music, and French. In 1850, he began a career as a draftsman with the Tasmanian Lands & Survey Department, contributing lithographic illustrations for the Geological Survey of Tasmania. After receiving a painting purchase from Sir James Agnew, the Premier of Tasmania, he eventually left public service in 1873 to focus entirely on painting. His work often captured the landscapes of western Tasmania, which were purchased by the Tasmanian government under a special act of parliament.
