      Taiteilijan elämäkerta

      nuoruus ja uran alku

      mark gertler, brittiläinen ihmishahmojen, muotokuvien ja asetelmien mestari, syntyi 9. joulukuuta 1891 Spitalfieldsin alueelle Lontooseen. Hänen varhaiset kokemuksensa sekä monimutkainen suhteensa dora carringtoniin toimivat inspiraationa Gilbert Cannanin romaanille Mendel. Gertlerin etunimi anglisoidaan muodosta "Marks" muotoon "Mark" vuonna 1896, kun hänen perheensä liittyi isän seuraan Lontoossa. Gertler osoitti poikkeuksellista piirustustaitoa jo hyvin nuorena; hän aloitti taideopinnot regent street polytechnic -instituutissa vuonna 1906, mutta köyhyys pakotti hänet keskeyttämään opintonsa. Vuonna 1908 hän aloitti oppipoikana clayton & bell -lasimaalaustehtaalla samalla, kun hän jatkoi iltakursseja polyteknisessä instituutiossa.

      Gertlerin ura karkasi loistoon, kun hän sijoittui kolmanneksi kansallisessa taidekilpailussa vuonna 1908. Tämän jälkeen hän aloitti opiskelun Lontoon slade school of art -taidekoulussa, missä hänestä tuli osa merkittävien taiteilijoiden sukupolvea, kuten paul nashin, edward wadsworthin ja sir stanley spencerin joukossa. Gertlerin tukijoihin kuului lady ottoline morrell, joka esitteli hänet walter sickertille, camden town groupin johtajalle. Hänen menestyksensä yhteiskunnallisena muotokuvaajana jäi kuitenkin lyhytaikaiseksi; hänen temperamenttinen luonteensa ja tinkimätön omaperäisyytensä taiteellisessa visiossaan johtivat lopulta henkilökohtaiseen turhautumiseen ja köyhyyteen.
