Early Life, Family and Training
Born into a family of weavers in Silesia, Albert Schindler—known then by his original name, Albrecht—faced a childhood shaped by modest means. He was born on 19 August 1805 in Andělská Hora. His path toward a life in art began when the artist Peter Fendi happened to be traveling through the area. Fendi noticed the young boy's natural talent for drawing and spoke to the family about the boy's potential. Eventually, the family agreed to let him move to Vienna to pursue this gift.
Life in the city brought new mentors and formal structure to his developing skill. Albert Schindler received private lessons from Fendi, who became a significant influence in his early years. In 1827, he took the next step in his education by enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. During his time there, he studied under A. F. Schaller, refining the technical precision that would define his work in the Biedermeier style.
His early years were marked by several key developments:
- His transition from a weaver's son in Silesia to a student in Vienna.
- The mentorship provided by Peter Fendi.
- His formal enrollment at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1827.
- His studies under A. F. Schaller.
Professional Career and Artistic Work
Schindler's professional life was deeply intertwined with the family of his mentor. After being taken in by Fendi, he became a member of the household, sharing a small apartment with the family and two adopted nieces. His formal training led him to the Academy of Fine Arts, where he held his first exhibition in 1832. By 1828, he had already begun working as a volunteer at the Imperial-Royal Münz- und Antikenkabinett, serving as a drawer and copper engraver.
His technical skill in engraving and drawing defined much of his daily labor. He spent many years focusing on precise, small-scale works, including:
- The creation of intricate cameos.
- A large set of medals featuring portraits of famous Austrians.
- Detailed copper engravings for the Mint and Antiquities Cabinet.
Following the death of Fendi in 1842, Schindler stepped into his predecessor's role. He took over the position of draftsman and engraver at the Mint and Antiquities Cabinet, a responsibility that would occupy much of his remaining years. This work required a steady hand and a focus on the fine details of metal and stone.
Later Years and Death
Life for Albert Schindler changed significantly in 1849 when his first wife, Antonia Barbara Birnegger, passed away. After this loss, he eventually found companionship again through his marriage to Maria Kappherr. Maria was a woman of some means who owned a house in the Laimgrube district, providing a settled place for his later years.
As the years passed, his focus shifted. The meticulous work required for his roles as a draftsman and engraver began to take a toll on his creative output. The time he spent creating detailed medals and cameos meant he had less room for his other artistic pursuits. He lived through a period of transition, moving from the mentorship of his early years into a more settled, though perhaps more occupied, existence.
His life came to an end in Vienna. He died on 3 May 1861 at the age of fifty-six. His passing marked the end of a life spent between the precision of the mint and the expressive needs of a painter.
