      Early Life, Family and Training

Anton Teichlein was born in Munich on 28 January 1820. He grew up within a respected citizen family in the city, the son of a confectioner. While his early path seemed destined for the study of sciences, his interests shifted after he finished his lower Latin classes. He chose instead to pursue a formal education at the Munich Academy.

In the studio of Wilhelm von Kaulbach, Teichlein began the slow work of mastering his craft. He spent his days in the Lehel district, learning the discipline of drawing from plaster and models. His training also included the study of Gliedermann. These years were spent observing the physical form and the way light settles upon a surface, building the technical foundation that would define his later years.

      Travels and Professional Career

The transition from student to professional was marked by a long period of observation. From the autumn of 1838 through the spring of 1839, he accompanied Kaulbach and his family on a trip through Italy. During these months, he kept a diary, recording the details of the time spent away from Munich. This period of travel was not a singular event but part of a broader pattern of movement. He spent many years undertaking study trips through Italy and France, moving through these landscapes to observe the light and the terrain.

His professional life eventually moved toward the preservation of art. In 1871, he took on the role of conservator at the Gemäldegalerie in the Schlossanlage Schleißheim. This position placed him in direct contact with the collections held within the palace complex. His work there involved the careful management of the gallery's holdings during his final years.

      Literary and Academic Contributions

Beyond the canvas, Teichlein spent much of his time examining the mechanics of his craft through writing. He produced numerous specialist articles that sought to dissect the technical and philosophical aspects of his medium. His observations on the concept of the painterly and the essence of painting show a mind preoccupied with the fundamental nature of visual expression. These reflections were not merely casual notes but structured inquiries into what makes a work of art truly a painting.

His written voice appeared frequently in established periodicals. He contributed to the Zeitschrift für bildende Kunst and the Kunstchronik, where his work spanned many years. In addition to these academic pursuits, he wrote critical feuilletons for the Bayerische Zeitung and the Vienna daily newspaper Die Presse. These pieces often moved between the realms of art and social thought, including reflections on political fragments and the ideas of others.

      Key Works and Output

Teichlein’s brush found its most steady rhythm in the quietude of the natural world. His landscape paintings often focused on the specific textures of the forest and the shifting light of the evening. In his oil painting Abendlandschaft bei Fontainebleau, there is a careful attention to the way light settles upon the terrain. This interest in the wooded landscape is further seen in his Studie aus Barbizon and his work titled Waldlandschaft. These pieces suggest a painter who spent much of his time observing the subtle shifts in color and shadow within dense, leafy environments.

His connection to the French landscape is particularly evident in Skoven ved Fontainebleau. This work is held within the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst. Through these studies, he captured the specific character of the terrain, moving between broad views and more focused, intimate observations of the earth and trees. His output remains rooted in these observations of light and place.
