Early Life, Family and Training
Born Marie-Antoinette Caroline Sorg in 1833 in Strasbourg, France, the woman who would later be known as Carola Sorg was shaped by a lineage of devotion and craft. She was the daughter of Marie-Louis-Joseph Sorg and Joseph Sorg, growing up within a family defined by deep religious conviction. This environment provided more than just a spiritual foundation; it offered a professional apprenticeship from her earliest years. She learned the technical nuances of her trade alongside her father and her brother, Louis Sorg, absorbing the traditions of a family of painters.
Her development as an artist eventually led her away from the familiar surroundings of Alsace to the artistic center of Paris. It was there that she sought formal refinement, entering the studio of Léon Cognet. Studying under Cognet provided her with a connection to a significant lineage of French painting, as he was a co-disciple of Delacroix and Jéricho. This period of training in Paris allowed her to refine the skills she had inherited from her family, preparing her for the specific demands of the religious commissions that would define her career.
Religious Commissions and Works
Specializing in religious painting, she signed her sacred compositions under the name Carola Sorg. Her career was defined by a steady stream of commissions for churches throughout the Alsace region. In 1860, she contributed a mural of Le Couronnement de la Vierge to the church of Wilwisheim, followed a few years later by a depiction of Saint Martin in the same location in 1864. These works demonstrate a commitment to the liturgical spaces of her homeland, where her presence is felt through the quiet permanence of her imagery.
Her later years saw a continued dedication to the altar and the sanctuary. In 1884, she produced The 14 Holy Intercessors, a work that remains a significant part of her output. The late nineteenth century brought further oil on canvas works, including Sainte-Cène in 1890 for the church of Magstatt-le-Bas. She continued to receive requests for high altarpieces, providing Saint Étienne for Châtenois-les-Forges in 1892 and Saint Nicolas for the altar at Gingsheim in 1897.

The Art of Saint-Martin d'Erstein
The church of Saint-Martin d'Erstein holds a significant collection of twenty-eight canvases by Carola Sorg. Installed in 1867, these works are distributed between the nave and the choir. They depict various scenes from the Old Testament alongside the Life of Christ. Each canvas possesses a monumental scale, measuring 3 meters in height and 1.60 meters in width.
Time has left its mark on this assembly. Currently, twenty-seven of these canvases require restoration to preserve their condition. To address this need, the church launched an appeal for donations to fund the necessary work. This effort seeks to ensure the survival of these large-scale religious paintings within the sanctuary.
