A life in lines and landscapes
Cyril Mandel lived a short life that spanned from Kuželov to Velká nad Veličkou. He moved through the world as an architect, a painter, and a draftsman. His hands worked with ink, watercolor, and oil, often focusing on the quiet details of Moravian life. In his drawings, one finds the weight of a pen-and-ink line or the soft spread of watercolor on paper.
His work often looked closely at the people and places around him. He captured figures in traditional clothing, such as a girl sitting in a room reading or another sewing a shirt. These studies of folk costumes were not mere sketches but observations of texture and habit. He also turned his gaze toward the land, painting hills, villas, and paths through the woods.
The textures of Moravia
Many of his pieces carry the specific light of the Horňácko region. He painted scenes like Am Bach, where the subject is a simple moment by a stream. His landscapes often included elements like stones, trees, and sunlight filtering through branches. There is a certain stillness in his depictions of a hayloft or a windy day.
The artist used various materials to record his surroundings:
- Oil on canvas for heavier subjects like Hirtenknabe
- Watercolor on paper for delicate studies of light and costume
- Ink and pen for the sharp, dark edges of a drawing
- Oil on cardboard for smaller, more intimate views
A quiet record
Mandel left behind more than just paintings; he left letters, invitations, and photographs. These fragments of his daily existence sit alongside his art, providing a glimpse into the correspondence of his life. His work remains tied to the specific geography of his birth and death, rooted in the landscapes of Moravia that he chose to document before 1907.
