A Life in Color and Form
Doris Lee was an American painter, muralist, and graphic artist who became one of the most successful female artists of the Depression era in the United States. Born in Aledo, Illinois, she pursued her artistic education at the Ferry Hall School, Rockford College, and the Kansas City Art Institute, where she studied under Ernest Lawson. She also attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. After her studies, Lee settled in Woodstock, New York, where she remained for the rest of her career. Her work has been featured in numerous public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Artistic Achievements and Style
Lee's career was marked by significant recognition, including winning the Logan Medal of the Arts from the Chicago Art Institute in 1935. During the 1930s, she received commissions from the United States Treasury Department to create murals for the Main Post Office in Washington, DC, and the Summerville, Georgia, Post Office. Her work often explored themes of rural customs and domestic life, such as her celebrated painting Thanksgiving, which depicted women preparing a feast.
Throughout her career, Lee's style evolved. In the 1930s and 1940s, she produced lithographs for the Associated American Artists. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, while working on commissions for Life magazine regarding travels to North Africa, Mexico, and Cuba, her work became more stylized, showing a heightened concern for color and pure forms.
