      The Quiet Observer of Berlin

Georg Schöbel began his life in a merchant family, a path his parents initially intended for him to follow. He learned the trade of a merchant before the pull of the brush led him toward the Berliner Akademie der Künste in 1884. He did not stay within the academy walls for long. Instead, he chose to refine his hand through self-study, working closely with the visual language of Paul Meyerheim and Adolph Menzel. His brush found its way into the specific details of history, often focusing on the life of Friedrich der Große.

His work shifted as the years turned and the world grew darker. With the onset of the First World War, his subjects moved from the quietude of historical scenes to the heavy, patriotic imagery of the Western Front. He was a man of many layers, moving between the gravity of battle and the gentler task of illustrating children's books. In 1904, his skill was recognized with a small gold medal at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung.

      A Life in Layers

His development was marked by a transition from the structured lessons of a merchant's life to the solitary discipline of an artist. He lived through a period of immense change in Germany, and his canvases reflected the shifting tides of his surroundings.

      The Final Years in Berlin

By the end of his life, Schöbel’s hands were slowed by a heart condition that had troubled him for three years. He lived in his Berlin apartment until he passed away in 1928. He left behind a body of work that remains present in galleries and at auction, a quiet record of the era he inhabited. His sister, Agnes Schöbel, was a writer, and his life was shared with his wife, Elsa Berta Dorothea Schnoor.
