Life and Artistic Evolution
Born in Halle (Saale), Germany, Herbert Kitzel was a painter, graphic artist, ceramicist, and university teacher. After studying at the Burg Giebichenstein art school from 1945 to 1950, he worked as a painter in Halle until 1957. His career saw him move to Karlsruhe in 1958, where he eventually held a professorship at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe. Kitzel was a member of the Verband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands and the Künstlerbund Baden-Württemberg.
His artistic journey involved various graphic techniques and ceramic works, the latter of which he began focusing on in 1969. Throughout his career, he participated in numerous exhibitions across Germany, including Munich, Darmstadt, and Recklinghausen, as well as international shows in Nancy, Amsterdam, and South America. In 1963, he was awarded the Kunstpreis der Stadt Darmstadt.
Style and Subject Matter
Kitzel developed an individual figurative style that evolved toward abstract expressionism while maintaining a connection to subject matter. His early works often drew themes from the world of acrobats, jugglers, and tightrope walkers. Following the events of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, his paintings were characterized by themes of mourning and threatening scenarios. His work is associated with the "Hallesche Grau," a style noted for its use of gray, movement, and melancholy.
