A Life in the Shadow of Bruges
Jean Van de Putte was born in Maldegem, Belgium, in 1828. He eventually made his home in Bruges, living in the Ezelstraat and later the Moerstraat. He lived a quiet, unassuming life, often staying with his sister and her husband, Louis Franck, who worked for the railways. This sense of domestic stability provided a backdrop to a life spent observing the changing face of his surroundings. He passed away in Bruges in 1872.
His surroundings offered a constant source of visual interest. He found inspiration in the quiet spaces between Bruges and Maldegem, focusing his attention on the landscape, the sturdy architecture of old farmhouses, and the silhouettes of castles. His work captured a specific sense of place, documenting the textures of the Belgian countryside and the lived-in quality of its buildings.
The Changing Cityscape
Van de Putte’s work often acted as a visual record of a world in transition. One of his most significant paintings, created in 1865, is The Old Beursplaats in Brugge. This work depicts a part of the Vlamingstraat that was soon to be lost to urban development. In 1866, the area was cleared to make room for the construction of a new city theater. His brush captured a moment in time before the demolition changed the street forever.
Within these urban scenes, specific details emerge that tell a story of local life:
- The house known as De Huzaar, which once stood in the Beursplaats.
- The tobacco shop owned by the Duvivier sisters, a well-known local establishment.
- The architectural details of the buildings that were eventually demolished for the city's expansion.
While many of his paintings focused on the rural hinterland, his cityscapes provided a historical anchor for the people of Bruges. The sign for 'De Huzaar' and the buildings themselves were eventually removed, but the memory of them remains preserved in his art and in the collections of the Volkskundemuseum.
Artistic Legacy and Collections
The visual output of Van de Putte was diverse, ranging from landscape studies to detailed city views. His drawings and paintings have found a permanent home in several important institutions. His work is held in the collections of the Groeningemuseum in Brugge and the Mu.ZEE in Oostende. These holdings ensure that his perspective on the Belgian landscape and the evolving streets of Bruges remains available to those studying the history of the region.
Beyond his own paintings, his influence extended into the realm of printmaking. The lithographer Daveluy produced an album of 24 lithographs based on Van de Putte's work, titled Souvenirs de Voyage. This collection helped spread his depictions of the landscape and architecture beyond the walls of a single gallery, cementing his place within the Bruges school of painters.
