The Life and Art of Johann Michael Neder
Known as the "Schustermaler", Johann Michael Neder was an Austrian painter born in Vienna. Before pursuing a career in art, he learned the craft of shoemaking from his father, a master shoemaker. His artistic talent led him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied under Karl Gsellhofer. Despite receiving the Czernin Prize in 1826 and exhibiting at the Academy in 1830, Neder briefly abandoned painting to return to his work as a shoemaker due to self-doubt. However, encouraged by Moritz Daffinger and Friedrich Gauermann, he returned to art in 1834. His life included travels to Salzburg, Berchtesgadener Land, and Kremsmünster, as well as brief stays in Prague and Budapest. During the revolution of 1848, he served as a lieutenant of the National Guard.
