      The Workshop of a Polymath

Born into a household where the scent of wood and paint lingered, Marcello Nitsche grew up amidst the tools of his parents' trades. His father was a painter of furniture and his mother a decorator, both hailing from Germany, and this early immersion in craftsmanship shaped his hands long before they held a brush for fine art. In São Paulo, he pursued a diverse education that spanned from the study of carpentry in high school to architecture at the University of São Paulo. This technical foundation allowed him to move between mediums with an ease that few could match.

He eventually found his way to the School of Fine Arts Armando Alvares Penteado, where he focused on drawing and graduated in 1969. His early years were marked by a restless curiosity, leading him to act as a recorder and engraver before fully committing to the canvas. He did not merely paint; he experimented with film, sculpture, and even inflatable structures. This versatility meant that his artistic identity was never fixed to a single method, but rather to an ongoing investigation of form and surface.

      Pop Aesthetics and Political Echoes

During the mid-1960s, a new energy began to pulse through his work, drawn from the aesthetics of comic books and the burgeoning Pop Art movement. He adopted the graphic language of mass media, using bold lines and borrowed imagery to speak to the tensions of his era. In 1966, he produced works like I Want You, which took the familiar imagery of American military recruitment and recontextualized it within the Brazilian landscape. By adding a drop of blood made from stuffed painted canvas, he transformed a symbol of recruitment into a commentary on the political imperialism and the Vietnam War era.

His work often engaged with the immediate surroundings of São Paulo. He participated in the REX Gallery circles, where the boundaries between the artist and the spectator began to blur through environmental constructions. His sculptures, such as the large inflatable Bolhas exhibited at the Bienal Internacional de São Paulo, invited a physical presence from the public. Even his more massive structures, like the modulated Garatuja installed in Praça da Sé, brought the language of the studio into the open streets of the city.

The Evolution of Gesture and Code

As the decades progressed, Nitsche’s focus shifted away from the sharp, graphic edges of his youth toward a deeper study of the brushstroke itself. By the 1980s, the spontaneous gesture became his primary subject. He began to treat the weave of paint as a structural element, converting free-flowing movements into complex graphic signs. This period saw him exploring the very texture of painting, where the physical act of applying pigment was transformed into a formal object of study.

In later years, a new fascination emerged from the modern landscape: the barcode. Starting around 2001, his paintings began to incorporate the vertical lines and numerical sequences found in these universal symbols. This phase brought a different kind of order to his work, using the repetitive, coded language of commerce to explore rhythm and variation. From the experimental Super-8 films of his early career to these structured, modern grids, his life remained a continuous search for new ways to translate the world into visual signs.
