A Life Between Sea and Canvas

Michael Lester, born in Dolyna, Ukraine, was a man whose life was defined by the dual callings of the sea and the arts. A master mariner and captain of the Merchant Marine, his professional journey took him from the maritime school in Tczew to serving as a first officer on various vessels. His seafaring expertise was vast, ranging from navigating near Indochina to commanding the schooner Orion. During the Second World War, he served on Q-ships used to combat German submarines. His deep connection to the ocean was not merely professional but deeply personal, as he was often described as the best captain among painters and the best painter among captains.

His artistic training was rigorous, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow under professors Józef Mehoffer and Kazimierz Sichulski. While his maritime career was distinguished, his talent for painting was equally profound. In the United Kingdom, he gained recognition as a marine painter, even having an exhibition opened by Bernard Shaw. He authored instructional books such as How to draw sail & sea and Marine Perspective, sharing his technical mastery of the sea's movement and structure.

      The Jamaican Years and Legacy

In 1953, Lester settled in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where he dedicated himself entirely to his art. It was during this period that he adopted the name "Lester" to accommodate the pronunciation of his Polish surname, though he continued to sign his works as M. Leszczyński. He established the Lester Art. Gallery, which became a significant part of the local cultural landscape. His presence in Jamaica was so impactful that a museum dedicated to his marine works was established in Montego Bay following his passing in 1972.

Lester's body of work reflects a lifetime of maritime experience, capturing the essence of sailing vessels and the sea. His legacy is preserved through his published theories on marine perspective and the various collections that hold his paintings, including works found in religious settings and maritime institutions.
