      Early Life and Artistic Training

Thomas Mickell Burnham was born in Boston, MA, in 1818. His early years were shaped by an informal arts training rather than the rigid structure of a formal academy. This self-directed start allowed him to develop his hand through practice and observation. Before settling into a professional career, he completed his first trip abroad, an experience that would later inform his perspective as a painter of landscapes and genre scenes.

The early development of his technique was marked by a practical, hands-on approach to color and form. He did not follow a traditional academic path, instead learning through direct engagement with his craft. This period of his life was defined by a quiet accumulation of skills that would eventually allow him to move between portraiture and more satirical subjects. His focus remained on the tangible details of the world around him, whether in the faces of his subjects or the light across a landscape.

      The Detroit Years and Studio

In 1836, Burnham found work in a sign painting shop in Detroit. The work was practical, requiring a steady hand for lettering and commercial imagery. By 1838, he had moved from the shop to a space of his own, opening an art studio in the city. This period saw him shifting his focus toward genre art, portraiture, and satirical works. He spent these years capturing the faces and social scenes of the growing settlement.

His brush moved between the formal requirements of a portrait and the sharper edges of satire. During this time, he produced First State Election in Detroit, Michigan, 1837, a work that captured a specific moment in the local political landscape. His studio became a place where the daily life and the political tensions of the region were translated onto canvas.

Return to Boston and Artistic Focus

In 1840, Burnham left Detroit and returned to Boston, where he would remain for the next twelve years. This period marked a shift in his subject matter. While his earlier years involved the quick work of a sign painter and the social satire of a studio owner, his time in Boston saw him turning toward the quiet observation of landscapes and genre scenes. He moved away from the political energy of his Michigan years to focus on the textures of the natural world and the small, telling moments of daily life.

His brushwork during these years captured specific, often layered, narratives. In The Young Artist, painted about 1840, he depicts a well-dressed white child drawing a chalk portrait of a Black child on a wooden basket. The work is accompanied by a poem suggesting that a person's character is found within, rather than in the color of their skin. This interest in human interaction and social observation sat alongside his growing interest in the American landscape. His works from this era found their way into exhibitions at the Boston Athenaeum and the National Academy.

Where to See the Works Today

Much of his physical presence remains in Detroit, Michigan. The Detroit Institute of Arts holds several of his canvases, preserving the traces of his time in the city. You can find The Young Artist there, a piece acquired through the Museum Purchase, Dexter M. Ferry Jr. Fund. It is an oil on canvas that captures a quiet, instructional moment between two children.

Other works from his Detroit years are also held by the same institution. First State Election in Detroit, Michigan, 1837 is part of the collection, alongside his portrait of Stevens Thomson Mason. These paintings offer a look at the specific subjects and people that occupied his studio during his early career in the Midwest.
