      Alexander Nasmyth a été une figure essentielle dans l'histoire de l'art écossais, reconnu à la fois comme portraitiste et, plus significativement, comme peintre de paysage.       • A été apprenti chez un constructeur de carrosses avant de se consacrer à l'art.
      • A étudié au Royal High School et à la Trustees’ Academy d'Édimbourg.
      • A travaillé comme assistant d'Allan Ramsay, un portraitiste renommé, à Londres (1774-1778). Cette expérience lui a fourni une formation technique précieuse et l'a exposé aux tendances artistiques contemporaines.
      • Est retourné à Édimbourg en 1778 et s'est établi comme portraitiste.
      • A voyagé en Italie (1782-1784) avec le soutien financier de Patrick Miller de Dalswinton, où il a approfondi sa compréhension de la peinture de paysage en étudiant les maîtres italiens et en copiant leurs œuvres, notamment celles de Claude Lorrain.
