      Bertram Nicholls (1883–1974) : Un peintre de paysages silencieux

      Bertram Nicholls, né à Didsbury, Manchester, le 26 septembre 1883, était le benjamin de William Andrews Nicholls (1842-7 août 1925), marchand de fruits, et de Mary née Allen, dont le mariage fut célébré à Kinver St Peter, dans le Staffordshire, le 9 avril 1866. Après avoir suivi sa scolarité à la Manchester Grammar School, il se consacra à ses études artistiques à la Slade School of Fine Art (1901–4), où il perfectiona son talent sous l'égide de Reginald Barber. Ses premières influences furent marquées par les œuvres de Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) et de Richard Wilson (1714-1782), des artistes dont l'observation méticuleuse et les harmonies tonales façonnèrent profondément la vision artistique de Nicholls.
