      Premières années et formation

      Franz Xaver Winterhalter est né le 20 avril 1805 à Menzenschwand, dans la petite forêt Noire, en Allemagne. Il était le sixième enfant de Fidel Winterhalter, agriculteur et producteur de résine, et de sa femme Eva Meyer. Son enfance fut marquée par une relation étroite avec sa famille, notamment son frère Hermann, qui devint également peintre. Franz Xaver fréquenta l'école d'un monastère bénédictin à St. Blasien avant de partir pour Fribourg-en-Brisgau pour étudier le dessin et la gravure sous la direction de Karl Ludwig Schüler. En 1823, il déménagea à Munich, soutenu par le baron von Eichtal, afin de poursuivre sa formation artistique.

      Ascension vers la célébrité

      La percée de Winterhalter survint en 1828 lorsqu'il devint précepteur en dessin de Sophie Margravine de Bade à Karlsruhe. Cette opportunité mena à sa nomination comme peintre à la cour grand-ducale, où il peignit les portraits du Grand-Duc Léopold de Bade et de son épouse. Ses œuvres notables incluent
      • "L'impératrice Eugénie entourée de ses dames d’honneur" (1855)
      • et des portraits de l'impératrice Elisabeth d'Autriche (1865).
