      • Giovanni Ulrico Giacometti est né le 7 mars 1868 à Borgonovo, en Suisse.
      • Il était issu d'une famille de huit enfants ; son père, Alberto, était boulanger et propriétaire d'un café.
      • Son cousin, Augusto Giacometti, était également peintre, l'introduisant dans le monde de l'art dès son plus jeune âge.
      • Il a initialement étudié à la Kunstgewerbeschule de Munich (1886-1887), mais les y trouvant insatisfaisants, il s’est rendu à Paris avec Cuno Amiet.
      • À Paris, il a étudié à l'Académie Julian sous William Adolphe Bouguereau et Joseph Nicolas Robert-Fleury jusqu'en 1891, lorsque des contraintes financières l'ont forcé à retourner en Suisse.
