      Henry Tonks (1862-1937) fut une figure remarquable qui a harmonieusement mélangé les mondes de la chirurgie et de l'art. Initialement formé comme chirurgien, il s’est ensuite consacré au dessin, à la peinture, à la caricature et, surtout, à l’enseignement artistique. Son influence sur l’art britannique à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle est indéniable, ayant façonné des générations d'artistes grâce à son enseignement rigoureux à la Slade School of Fine Art.

      Jeunesse et Carrière Médicale

      Né à Solihull, dans le Warwickshire, Tonks venait d’une famille impliquée dans la propriété de fonderies de bronze à Birmingham. Sa formation a commencé à Bloxham School, suivie par Clifton College à Bristol. Il s'est consacré à la médecine, étudiant au Royal Sussex County Hospital à Brighton (1882–85) et au London Hospital à Whitechapel (1885–88). Devenant chirurgien à l’hôpital de Londres sous Sir Frederick Treves, il fut élu Fellow du Royal College of Surgeons en 1888. Sa carrière médicale s'est poursuivie à l'Royal Free Hospital à Londres, où il a également enseigné l'anatomie à la London Hospital Medical School à partir de 1892.

      Développement Artistique et Influences

      Tout en poursuivant ses études médicales, Tonks a commencé à étudier l’art le soir à Westminster School of Art sous Frederick Brown. Cela marqua un tournant dans sa vie, le conduisant à explorer plus sérieusement ses talents artistiques. Il exposa des peintures avec le New English Art Club à partir de 1891 et devint membre en 1895. Tonks fut notablement influencé par l’Impressionnisme français, comme en témoigne son utilisation de la lumière et de la couleur. Il associa avec d'importants artistes tels que James McNeill Whistler, Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent et George Clausen, absorbant leurs techniques et leurs perspectives.

      Enseignement à la Slade School et Héritage

Suite à la nomination de Frederick Brown comme professeur de beaux-arts à la Slade en 1892, Tonks commença à enseigner à la Slade School of Fine Art. Il succéda finalement à Brown comme professeur à la Slade de 1918 à 1930, un poste qu'il refusa initialement au profit de Walter Sickert. Il devint connu sous le nom de « l’enseignant le plus renommé et le plus redoutable de sa génération ». Ses élèves comprenaient une impressionnante liste d'artistes influents tels que Winifred Knights, David Bomberg, William Lionel Claus, Mukul Dey, Ian Fairweather, Mark Gertler, Harold Gilman, Spencer Gore, Edna Clarke Hall, Augustus John, Gwen John, Percy Wyndham Lewis, Hyam Myer, William Orpen, Isaac Rosenberg, Stanley Spencer et Rex Whistler. Son style d'enseignement exigeant, bien que parfois controversé, favorisa un niveau élevé de compétence artistique et de pensée critique chez ses élèves.

      Artiste de Guerre et Dernières Années

      Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, Tonks retourna à la médecine, servant dans un camp de prisonniers de guerre à Dorchester puis à Hill Hall dans l'Essex. Il documenta les expériences de guerre à travers des dessins au pastel, y compris des portraits d’Auguste Rodin et de sa femme qui étaient réfugiés. Il servit comme brancardier près du Marne en France et rejoignit une unité ambulancière en Italie. En 1916, il devint lieutenant dans le Royal Army Medical Corps, produisant des archives vitales de cas de blessures faciales à Cambridge Military Hospital et Queen's Hospital – un travail reconnu lors d’expositions telles que « Faces of Battle » au National Army Museum et “Henry Tonks: Art and Surgery” à la Strang Print Room. Il servit comme artiste de guerre officiel en 1918, accompagnant John Singer Sargent lors de visites du front occidental, témoignant de scènes qui inspirèrent la toile monumentale de Sargent, *Gassed*. Au cours de ses dernières années, on lui offrit une chevalerie qu'il refusa, se retirant en 1930 et décédant à Chelsea en 1937. Une exposition rétrospective de son œuvre à la Tate Gallery en 1936 le marqua comme l’un des rares artistes britanniques vivants à recevoir un tel honneur.
