L'événement artistique déterminant fut son abandon définitif du sacerdoce en 1903 : il jeta son chapeau sur un poteau et embrassa une vocation plus enrichissante. Il établit rapidement sa réputation de peintre de fleurs, capturant la délicate beauté des blossoms avec une minutie remarquable et des coups de pinceau expressifs – un style qui allait définir son héritage artistique.
