      John Wesley Jarvis fut un portraitiste américain de premier plan du début du XIXe siècle. Né en Angleterre et ayant plus tard immigré à Philadelphie avec sa famille, Jarvis développa une carrière significative marquée à la fois par son talent artistique et une personnalité flamboyante. Il est particulièrement connu pour ses portraits de figures importantes de l'époque de la guerre de 1812 et ses voyages considérables à travers les États-Unis à la recherche de commandes.

      Jeunesse et Formation Artistique

      La lignée de Jarvis le reliait au mouvement méthodiste, étant un parent du révérend John Wesley. Sa formation artistique précoce commença à Philadelphie, où il fréquentait l'atelier de Matthew Pratt, un portraitiste colonial bien établi. Il rencontra également Christian Gullager, un artiste danois travaillant dans la région. Un accident vasculaire cérébral débilitant en 1834 alors qu'il était à La Nouvelle-Orléans affecta considérablement sa santé et ses capacités artistiques. Il passa ses dernières années à New York, pris en charge par sa sœur, et mourut dans la pauvreté. Malgré ces difficultés, Jarvis a laissé derrière lui un corpus important d’œuvres qui offrent un aperçu précieux du paysage social et culturel de l'Amérique au début du XIXe siècle.
