      Kurt Schwitters : Une vie en Merz

      Jeunesse et formation

      • Né : le 20 juin 1887, à Hanovre, Allemagne.
      • Schwitters était l'enfant unique d'Eduard et Henriette Schwitters. Son père était copropriétaire d'un magasin de vêtements pour dames.
      • La situation financière de la famille s'est améliorée après la vente de l'entreprise en 1898, leur permettant de vivre des revenus locatifs des propriétés acquises.
      • Il étudia l'art à l'Académie de Dresde de 1909 à 1915 aux côtés d'artistes tels qu'Otto Dix et George Grosz, bien qu'il semble être resté inconscient de leurs travaux à l'époque.
      • Schwitters souffrit de sa première crise d'épilepsie en 1901, ce qui l'exemptera plus tard du service militaire pendant une période lors de la Première Guerre mondiale.

      Développement artistique et naissance du Merz

        Initialement, Schwitters travaillait dans un style postimpressionniste. Ses premières œuvres reflétaient cette influence.
      • Les dévastations de la Première Guerre mondiale ont profondément marqué sa direction artistique. Il a ressenti que la formation académique traditionnelle était devenue dénuée de sens face à l'effondrement de la société.

      • Le terme « Merz » lui-même provient d'un fragment de texte (« Commerz und Privatbank ») découpé dans une publicité et incorporé dans l'une de ses premières œuvres, *Das Merzbild* (1918-19).
