Né en 1876 au 61 University Road, à Belfast, son enfance fut marquée par une famille imprégnée de traditions presbytériennes ; son père, Robert Mitchell Henry, était un pasteur baptiste dont l'influence contribua à créer un environnement formateur d'une grande profondeur intellectuelle et spirituelle. De ses premiers dessins réguliers au Methodist College de Belfast à sa formation rigoureuse à la Royal Belfast Academical Institution, le parcours de Henry fut celui d'une quête artistique dévouée. Son voyage l'a finalement conduit au cœur du monde de l'art à Paris, où il étudia dans la prestigieuse Académie Julian et au sein de l'atelier de Whistler à l'Académie Carmen. Ces années formatrices en France ont infusé son œuvre d'une compréhension sophistiquée de la lumière et de la forme, ce qui allait plus tard définir sa contribution unique au postimpressionnisme.
