      A Life Between Two Worlds

Aleksander Blonder, known to many by the pseudonym André Blondel, lived a life defined by movement and shifting identities. Born in 1909 in Chortkiv, then part of Poland, he grew up within a multilingual landscape of Polish, Hebrew, and Yiddish. His early years were marked by an architectural precision that would later inform his approach to the canvas. In 1926, he arrived in Paris, a city that would become both his sanctuary and his studio. A scholarship allowed him to settle there in 1929 to study architecture at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts.

The pull of painting eventually led him back to Poland. Between 1932 and 1936, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under professors such as Teodor Axienteowicz, Władysław Jarocki, and Fryderyk Pautsch. It was during this period that his political and artistic lives intertwined. He became an active figure in left-wing circles and helped found the Zywi Association, a group of artists that would eventually coalesce into the First Group of Krakow. His work during these years began to reflect the tensions of a Europe on the brink of upheaval.

The Shadow of War and the Search for Refuge

The outbreak of the Second World War forced Blonder into a different kind of struggle. After being drafted into the Polish army in France in 1939, he was eventually released in Toulouse in 1940. The following years were a period of flight and concealment. With the assistance of resistance networks, he found refuge near Aix-en-Provence and later Carcassonne. It was during this era of instability that he adopted the name André Blondel, using false identity papers to protect himself and his family from persecution.

In 1943, he married Louise Bonfils. This union provided a sense of continuity amidst the chaos of the era. As he moved through the South of France, his creative output remained steady despite the hardships of life in hiding. He found himself part of a circle of intellectuals and artists, including the poet Joë Bousquet, for whom he produced several portraits. His presence in the region was marked by an engagement with the landscapes and people of the area, even as his legal existence remained precarious.

      A Final Chapter in Paris

The liberation of France brought a period of renewed artistic activity. Moving between Carcassonne, Sète, and eventually Paris, Blonder became associated with the School of Paris and the School of Sète. His paintings from this time are noted for their luminous compositions and a focus on the beauty of human scenes and landscapes. He was a member of the Salon d'Automne and participated in various exhibitions that connected him to the broader avant-garde movement.

His life reached an abrupt end in Paris in 1949, following an accidental fall in the rue de Seine. He was forty years old. He left behind a substantial body of work, consisting of more than 700 oil paintings and over 700 drawings. These works remain as the primary record of a man who navigated the complexities of nationality, politics, and art during one of the most turbulent decades of the twentieth century.
