A Life Shaped by the Light of Paris and Sweden

Born in the coastal town of Uddevalla, Birger Simonsson did not initially set his sights on the easel. His early years were marked by the practicalities of a merchant family, leading him through academic pursuits at Lund University and even a period working on the railway. Yet, a quiet transformation was taking place. By 1904, he had shared with his sister his intention to pursue painting, a decision that would pull him away from the predictable paths of Sweden toward the studios of Copenhagen and eventually the heart of the French avant-garde.

The air of Paris changed everything for him. Between 1906 and 1912, he moved through the city's artistic circles, finding himself a student at the Académie Matisse. While he studied under the great master of color, his heart found a different kind of resonance in the works of Van Gogh. He admired the human connection found in that expressive style, preferring its emotional depth to the more Olympian detachment of his teacher. This period of immersion in France, alongside fellow Scandinavists, allowed him to absorb new ways of seeing form and light.

The Spirit of the Young Ones

Upon returning to his homeland, Simonsson found a landscape dominated by older traditions. He did not seek to simply join the existing order but rather to help forge something new. In 1909, he became a leading figure in a group known as De Unga, or The Young Ones. This collective of artists sought to challenge the established norms of National Romanticism with a fresh, modern vision. Alongside peers like Isaac Grünewald, he helped introduce a style that utilized bold brushwork and non-naturalistic colors to stir the viewer.

His life continued to oscillate between the familiar comforts of Sweden and the creative energy of France. He lived in various places, including Norway and the coastal regions of Kungälv, often painting en plein aire to capture the immediate essence of his surroundings. His marriage to the artist Ingrid Gustafsson created a partnership rooted in shared creative devotion. Even as he moved through different landscapes, from the streets of Paris to the Swedish countryside, his focus remained on the fundamental elements of portraiture and landscape.

      A Legacy in the Academy

As the years progressed, the radical young painter transitioned into a respected educator and professor. His deep understanding of the medium led him to the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where he eventually held a professorship. He also took on leadership roles at the Valand School of Art, serving as the chair of the landscape painting department. This period of his life was defined by a commitment to passing on the lessons of modernism to the next generation of Swedish painters.

His contributions are preserved in several significant institutions, ensuring that his vision remains accessible to those who study the evolution of Swedish modernism. His work can be found in:

      • Moderna Museet in Stockholm
      • Gothenburg Museum of Art
      • National Museum in Stockholm
      • Museums in Norrköping, Örebro, Gävle, Ystad, and Sandviken

Through his paintings, drawings, and even bronze works, Simonsson left behind a record of an artist who successfully bridged the gap between provincial beginnings and the international avant-garde.
