      The Weight of Displacement

A homemade boat drifts across the Pacific. It is 1979. Four-year-old Võ Trung Kỳ Danh and his family are fleeing the aftermath of war in Vietnam, seeking the United States, but the currents lead them elsewhere. A Danish freighter from the Maersk shipping company intercepts them. This moment of rescue pulls the family toward Denmark, a shift that will later define the fragments of identity found in his work.

The artist grows up in Copenhagen, moving through the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later the Städelschule in Frankfurt. His practice exists at the intersection of autobiography and collective history. He does not merely create objects; he reconfigures cultural debris to explore how much of a person is shaped by where they have been and what they have lost.

      Fragments and Reconfigurations

The work often arrives as a collection of found items, rearranged to tell stories of migration and belonging. In Oma Totem, the artist stacks the physical remnants of his grandmother’s arrival in Germany during the 1980s. A television, a washing machine, and a refrigerator adorned with a crucifix form a sculptural pile of survival and resettlement.

Identity is treated as something malleable, never fixed. This is seen in the conceptual project Vo Rosasco Rasmussen. Through a series of marriages and immediate divorces, he adopts the surnames of his spouses, literally accumulating names to author a history through institutional convention. His official name becomes a long string of identities: Trung Kỳ Danh Võ Rosasco Rasmussen.

Other works utilize heavy, industrial materials to mirror global power structures:

      • We the People: A massive, fragmented copper replica of the Statue of Liberty, consisting of approximately 300 sections distributed across various global sites.
      • Das Beste oder Nichts: An assembly featuring a Mercedes-Benz engine, a gold Rolex watch, and a U.S. military ring, representing both Western success and personal heritage.
      • 2.2.1861, 2009–ongoing: A series of transcriptions where his father, Phung Võ, hand-copies the final letter of a French missionary, Saint Jean-Théophane Vénard, written before his execution in Vietnam.

      The Architecture of Memory

The artist lives and works between Berlin and Mexico City, a movement that mirrors the fluidity of his subject matter. His installations often use archives, photos, and appropriated objects to destabilize notions of citizenship. He looks at the traces left behind by others—the personal effects of Robert McNamara or the photographic archives of Joseph Carrier—to find connections between private lives and large-scale political events.

In his hands, a piece of copper or a hand-copied letter becomes a way to query the structures of legitimacy. He does not look for stability; he looks for the tension in the flux of a changing world.
