      A Life Across Borders

Born in Stockholm on 31 August 1661, David Richter the Elder lived a life that moved through the many centers of European power. His early years were shaped by the guidance of the German painter David Klöker Ehrenstrahl, under whom he trained in his home city. This apprenticeship provided the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him far from Sweden.

By 1679, Richter is thought to have traveled to Rome, an experience that likely broadened his understanding of classical forms. His path then took him through the courts of Germany. During the 1690s, he worked as a court painter in Dresden and Berlin, finding steady work among the nobility. He eventually settled in Vienna, where he remained until his death on 30 April 1735.

The Work of a Court Painter

Richter’s repertoire was divided between the faces of the era and the quietude of nature. As a court painter, he was frequently called upon to capture the likenesses of significant figures. His portraits include:

      • Axel Sparre
      • Carl Gustaf Lewenhaupt
      • Eugen von Savoyen
      • Maria Amalia of Austria
      • Francis II Rákóczi

Beyond these formal portraits, he also turned his attention to landscapes. His work Ideale Landschaft shows a focus on structured, composed views of the natural world. These pieces, along with his portraiture, reflect the varied demands placed upon an artist serving different royal and noble houses across Europe.

A Lasting Presence in European Collections

Though he lived through a period of significant political change, Richter's presence remains visible in several major institutions today. His ability to move between the roles of portraitist and landscape painter allowed his work to find homes in diverse locations. You can find his traces in the following galleries:

His life, spanning from the late seventeenth century to the early eighteenth, connects the artistic traditions of Sweden, Germany, and Austria. Through his movement between Stockholm, Berlin, and Vienna, he helped carry the visual language of the courts across much of the continent.
