A Life of Devotion and Color

Born in Mainburg on December 20, 1699, Christoph Thomas Scheffler grew up surrounded by the smell of oil and pigment. His father, Wolfgang Scheffler, was a painter, and it was under his father's watchful eye that the young man first learned the delicate trade of his craft. This early apprenticeship provided more than just technical skill; it offered a foundation for a life spent translating spiritual themes into visual form.

In the years between 1719 and 1722, Scheffler traveled as a journeyman, working alongside Cosmas Damian Asam. This period of movement allowed him to absorb the nuances of the Rococo style, a movement characterized by its lightness and grace. His path took a profound turn in 1722 when he joined the Jesuit Order as a lay brother. For several years, his art and his faith were inseparable, as he dedicated much of his talent to decorating the very churches that housed his religious community.

      The Art of the Fresco

Scheffler found his true calling in the expansive medium of frescoes. He possessed a particular ability to work with large-scale ceiling paintings that transformed architectural spaces into scenes of heavenly light. His hands were often high above the ground, applying pigment to wet plaster to create works that felt integrated into the very bones of the buildings.

His notable achievements include several significant religious decorations:

      • The frescoes within the St. Cäcilia church in Heusenstamm, a project linked to the work of Balthasar Neumann.
      • Paintings for St. Paulinus' Church in Trier, supported by Elector Franz Georg von Schönborn.
      • Religious iconography depicting the life of Saint Aldegonde of Maubeuge in the St. Walburg Chapel at Eichstätt.

While some of his work was lost to history, such as the frescoes in the chapel of the Deutschhaus in Mainz which were destroyed during World War II, his surviving religious compositions remain important examples of German Rococo painting. He often focused on themes of divine glory, including works like Apokalyptische Vision mit Marienkrönung and Glorifizierung des Herzens Jesu.

      Final Years in Augsburg

After leaving the Jesuit Order in 1728, Scheffler did not abandon his brush. He settled in Augsburg, a city that would become his home until the end of his life. In this period, he continued to produce religious imagery, including depictions of the Virgin Mary and various saints, maintaining the technical precision he had honed since his youth.

He lived in Augsburg until his death on January 25, 1756. Though he moved away from the structured life of a lay brother, the spiritual weight of his early training remained visible in every stroke of his work. He left behind a legacy of painted ceilings that once brought the stories of the faith to life for those looking upward.
