      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1883 in Strasbourg, France, Ernest Lincker was raised in a household defined by academic discipline. He was the son of Maria Catharina Simon and Ludwig Philipp L., a school director. This structured upbringing provided a foundation for a career that would eventually span many disciplines of the visual arts. Lincker proved to be a versatile practitioner, working as a painter, figure painter, and portrait painter, while also applying his skills as a commercial artist, engraver, and draftsman.

His formal education began in 1901 when he entered the École des Arts décoratifs. Seeking to refine his technical command, he later moved to Munich to attend the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. It was during this period of intensive study that he worked under the guidance of Feuerstein and Becker-Gundal. These formative years in the academies shaped the precision and breadth of his artistic output, allowing him to navigate both the fine arts and the commercial demands of his era.

      Awards and Artistic Recognition

Lincker’s early professional standing was marked by significant institutional recognition. In 1908, he was awarded a silver medal for his work La mort et la Danseuse. This early success provided a foundation for his subsequent achievements in the competitive circles of European art academies.

A pivotal moment in his career arrived in 1910 when he received the Graf-Schalck prize for his triptych Amour. This distinction was more than a mere accolade; it functioned as a practical gateway to the Mediterranean. The prize provided the necessary means for him to travel and reside in Italy for two and a half years. During this period, he spent a significant portion of his time in Florence, between 1912 and 1914, where the influence of the Italian landscape and classical tradition likely informed his developing perspective.

      Key Works and Artistic Output

Lincker’s output was characterized by a deep engagement with allegorical themes and the formal structure of the triptych. His ability to handle complex narrative compositions was recognized early on, particularly with the triptych Amour, which earned him the Graf-Schalck prize in 1910. This period of recognition led to an extended stay in Italy, where his focus shifted toward the dramatic interplay of life and mortality. During his time in Florence, he produced La Mort et la Femme, a work that explored the human condition through a tripartite lens. The central component of this series, La mort de la mère, remains a significant allegorical piece, eventually finding a permanent place within the collections of the Strasbourg Museums.

As his career progressed, his subject matter expanded to include landscapes and more varied compositions. In 1924, he painted Near Clarens on Lake Geneva, capturing the specific atmosphere of the Swiss landscape. His later explorations moved toward different modes of expression, including works such as Abstract Dürnstein at the Donau and a variety of drawings that demonstrate his technical skill as a draftsman and engraver. These works reveal a painter capable of navigating between strict figurative representation and more distilled, abstract forms.

      Later Years and Death

The trajectory of Lincker’s life was interrupted by the onset of the First World War. He was mobilized in 1914, a period that would demand much from his physical constitution. By 1917, his health had declined to the point that he was released from his military service. This period of recovery and transition preceded a more settled chapter of his life in Germany.

In 1921, he established a family in Frankfurt, marrying Selma Eva Ibach on June 28. The years that followed were marked by the quiet rhythms of domestic life and continued artistic practice. He and Selma had two daughters, Eva Marion and Eva Maria, though the latter passed away at the age of four. His presence in Frankfurt remained constant until his death in 1935. He died in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, leaving behind a body of work that captured both the allegorical and the landscape.

Where to See the Works Today

The physical remnants of Lincker’s career are held within several significant European institutions, often as parts of larger compositions. His triptychs, which frequently explored themes of mortality, remain distributed across different collections. The Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art maintains a presence in his legacy, holding the painting La mort de la mère. This specific work was acquired by the Strasbourg Museums and remains a central piece of their holdings.

Other components of his larger allegorical works have found homes elsewhere. The Römer-Museum de Hildesheim holds La Mort et l’Enfant, which was part of a larger triptych. This work, along with La Mort et la Femme, illustrates the fragmented nature of his larger-scale commissions. While some pieces remain in their original groupings, others exist as individual studies or drawings that reflect his technical skill as a draftsman and engraver.
