A Spanish Post-Impressionist painter known for Idyll Ibiza. Discover the vibrant beauty of his sun-filled Mediterranean scenes today.
1896 - 1968, Spain
Born in the Spanish city of Álcoi, Rigoberto Perez Soler was an artist whose destiny was shaped by a profound rebellion against tradition. While his father, a dedicated administrator in the city’s recording office, envisioned a stable future for his son in the world of banking, Soler found his true calling within the vibrant strokes of a paintbrush. He sought refuge in the pursuit of beauty, training formally at the School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia and later at the prestigious School of Fine Arts of San Carlos. This rigorous academic foundation provided him with the technical mastery that would eventually allow him to capture the ephemeral essence of the Spanish landscape with a soft, Impressionist touch.
The trajectory of Soler’s life changed forever when he moved to the island of Ibiza in the mid-1920s. This move was more than a change of scenery; it was an immersion into a world of sun-drenched landscapes and coastal intimacy. Settling in the village of Santa Eulària des Riu, he famously constructed a modest dwelling known as Niu Blau, or Blue Nest, near a small cove. This location became so intertwined with his identity that the nearby beach, Platja des Niu Blau, remains named in homage to his home. During these formative years on the island, Soler lived a bohemian existence, often featuring his girlfriend and model, Pilar, in his works, capturing the local spirit and the people who inhabited this Mediterranean paradise.
Soler’s artistic language was deeply rooted in the Post-Impressionist tradition, characterized by an earthy palette and a remarkable ability to evoke atmosphere. His works often shimmer with the warmth of the Spanish sun, utilizing oil on canvas and board to create textures that feel both grounded and luminous. He possessed a unique talent for translating the tranquil rhythms of island life into visual poetry, whether through sweeping seascapes or intimate genre scenes. His technique allowed him to move beyond mere representation, imbuing his subjects with a sense of nostalgia and light that resonated deeply with both locals and visitors alike.
The artist's achievements were recognized on the national stage, marking significant milestones in his professional development:
As time progressed, Soler’s life transitioned from the rugged, sun-soaked shores of Ibiza to the academic halls of Barcelona. Though he eventually sold his beloved Ibiza home in 1956, the island remained an indelible part of his creative soul. His later years were defined by his dedication to teaching, passing on his knowledge to a new generation of artists until his retirement in 1964. Even as he moved away from the coast, the themes of his youth—the light, the sea, and the Mediterranean landscape—continued to inform his artistic legacy.
Today, the works of Rigoberto Perez Soler stand as a testament to a life lived in pursuit of light. From the nostalgic depictions of children at the beach in Marina to the structured beauty of his landscapes, his oeuvre captures a specific, vanished era of Spanish coastal life. Through his ability to blend realistic detail with impressionistic emotion, Soler ensured that the vibrant, sun-filled world of his Mediterranean inspiration would endure long after his passing in Valencia.
