      A művész életrajza

Seydou Keïta (1921-2001): maliai fotóművész, aki a 1950-es évek Bamako társadalmának elegáns stúdióportréiról ismert.

      About the painting
Seydou Keïta (born c. 1921, Bamako, Mali, ded in 2001, Paris, France) is unanimously regarded today as the most famous African studio photographer of the 20th century. Discovered in the West in the early 1990s, his work, composed essentially of black and white portraits made in his studio in Bamako from 1948 to 1962, has since been exhibited in major museums and written about in numerous publications. But before his talent was recognized worldwide, Keïta was initially a “studiotiste” who was very famous in Mali and throughout West Africa, thanks to his understanding of the pose, the quality of his prints and the staging of his portraits, in which the accessories bear witness to the changes in urban Malian society during the process of decolonization with independence on the horizon.

      Seydou Keïta

      1921 - 2001, Mali

      A művész életrajza

      A posztkolóniai portretészet úttörője

1962-ben Keïta karrierje váratlan fordulatot vett, amikor állami szolgálatba vonult, Maliban a rendőrfőnök hivatalos fotójává, majd később a nemzetbiztonsági igazgatóvá vált. New York-i Center for African Art-on. Az éles szemű művészeti kurátor, André Magnin döntő szerepet játszott Keïta felismerésében és hatalmas negatív archívumának szélesebb körű ismertetéssé tesztében, feltárva munkássága rendkívüli mélységét és művészi tudatosságát. A jelentős visszatekintéseket, beleértve a 2016-os párizsi Grand Palais-ban megrendezett monumentális kiállítást, rögzítették státuszát a 20. századi fotózás egyik vezető alakjaként. Seydou Keïta öröksége messze túlmutat technikai tudásán; nem csupán hasonlatokat örökített meg, hanem egy nemzet szellemét is – felbecsülhetetlen betekintést nyitva a posztkolóniai afrikai életbe és stílusba, amely ma is éreztesi magát a világszerte élő közönséggel. Munkája erőteljes tanúbizonysága a portréfotózás állandó erejének, amely képes dokumentálni, ünnepelni és megőrizni a kulturális identitást.
