The Life and Training of Aimé Pez
Born in Tournai, Belgium, Aimé Pez was the son of Jean Baptiste Pez and Constance Joseph Cottignie. His artistic journey began under the guidance of Philippe-Auguste Hennequin at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai, where he earned the first prize in the nature class in 1827. Seeking to refine his skills, he moved to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp to study under Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée and Ferdinand de Braekeleer. His formal education was furthered in Paris, where he perfected his technique.
Pez established himself as a painter of genre scenes, often creating compositions that evoked the style of seventeenth-century Dutch masters such as Jan Steen, Adriaen Brouwer, and Frans Hals. His work frequently depicted familiar settings and historical characters, capturing moments of daily life and social interaction.
