A Life of Devotion and Artistry
Ignác Raab was a Czech painter and Jesuit brother born in Nechanice. His artistic journey began under the guidance of Jan Jiří Major, a disciple of Petr Brandl, with whom he studied for seven years. In 1744, at the age of 29, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. Throughout his life, Raab served in various Jesuit houses, including locations in Brno, Klatovy, Uherské Hradiště, University of Olomouc, Jihlava, and Kutná Hora. His work spanned many roles, from a skilled hand painter to providing table service and elder care.
His artistic output was extensive, involving the creation of many paintings and frescoes for churches, monasteries, and religious buildings. He was known to sign his works, viewing the ability to create as a right granted by God. His career saw him working in Prague, New Town, and Opava, and he eventually spent his final years in Velehrad after the Jesuit Order was abolished in 1773.
