      Early Life, Family and Training

Mikhail Scotti was born into a lineage of painters. His father, Ivan Karlovich Scotti, worked as a decorative painter, having been brought to Russia from Northern Italy. This connection to his Italian descent shaped the early environment of the household. After his father passed away, Mikhail was adopted and raised by the history painter Alexei Yegorov. This transition from biological family to a mentor's care defined his formative years.

His education began at Saint Catherine's Catholic school, where he received his primary schooling. From there, his path led toward the Imperial Academy of Arts. He spent time auditing classes at the Academy, absorbing the technical requirements of the craft. His hand showed early promise in the study of form; he was awarded a silver medal for his ability to draw from life. By 1835, he had completed his formal training, graduating with a gold medal.

      Career in Russia and Italy

After his formal training, he spent time on the Shepelev estate near Ardatov. There, his days were occupied with giving drawing lessons and painting icons. This period of quiet work preceded a move toward the south. He traveled through Germany toward Italy, accompanied by Count Pavel Kutaisov. He remained in Italy until 1844, absorbing the light and forms of the region.

His work took him back to religious subjects in different settings. In 1844, he painted icons for the Russian Orthodox chapel located at the embassy in Istanbul. By 1845, he had moved on to create a series of icons for the Saviour Cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod. These religious commissions contributed to his recognition, and he was eventually awarded the title of Academician.

      Teaching and Religious Works

In Moscow, Scotti took up the position of teacher and inspector at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, stepping into the role previously held by Fyodor Zavyalov. He spent his time there guiding a new generation of painters. Among those who studied under his hand were Konstantin Makovsky, Nikolai Nevrev, Vasily Perov, and Sergei Gribkov. He watched them work, passing on the technical foundations of his own training.

His brush often turned toward the sacred. He continued to produce numerous religious works throughout this period. In Saint Petersburg, he contributed to the decoration of the Annunciation Church. This work was carried out under the direction of Konstantin Thon. His hands moved between the quiet demands of the classroom and the steady, disciplined requirements of ecclesiastical painting.

      Travels and Final Years

In 1857, his movements took him across borders. He spent time in Italy, Spain, and France, moving through these places as he had done in his earlier years. These travels were part of a life spent observing the light and forms of the continent.

His time in France came to an end in Paris. A sudden, brief illness took him in 1861. He was buried in the Montmartre Cemetery, leaving behind the quiet life of a painter who had moved between the academies of Russia and the studios of Europe.
